Learn the proper technique to draw your medicine into a syringe.
Prepare yourself.
Get your tools together: a medicine vial, a syringe, an alcohol pad, and a sharps container.
Make certain you’re working in a clean environment.
Please wash your hands.
Examine Your Medications
Look at the label. Make certain you’re on the right medication.
Examine the vial’s date. Do not use medicine that has passed its expiration date.
It’s possible that you have a multi-dose vial. Alternatively, you could have a vial of powder that you mix with liquid. If you need to mix your medicine, read the instructions or ask for help.
If you plan to use the medicine more than once, make a note of the date on the vial so you can remember when you first opened it.
Examine the medication in the vial. Look for any changes in color, small pieces floating in the liquid, cloudiness, or anything else.
Prepare the Vial
Remove the cap from the vial if this is your first time using it.
Using an alcohol pad, clean the rubber top.
Putting Medicine in the Syringe
With the needle pointed up, hold the syringe in your hand like a pencil.
Pull the plunger back to the line on your syringe for your dose while keeping the cap on. The syringe will now be filled with air.
The needle should be inserted into the rubber top. The needle should not be touched or bent.
Fill the vial with air. This prevents the formation of a vacuum. It will be difficult to draw out the medicine if you put in too little air. The medicine may be forced out of the syringe if you put in too much air.
Invert the vial and hold it in the air upside down. Keep the tip of the needle in the medicine.
For your dose, pull the plunger back to the syringe’s line. If you need 1 cc of medicine, for example, pull the plunger to the 1 cc line on the syringe. It’s worth noting that some medicine bottles will say mL. One cc of medicine is equal to one milliliter of medicine.
To get rid of air bubbles in the syringe, do the following:
Keep the syringe tip in the vial.
To move air bubbles to the top of the syringe, tap it with your finger. Then gently press down on the plunger to return the air bubbles to the vial.
Push the plunger to force all of the medicine back into the vial if there are a lot of bubbles. Slowly draw the medicine out again, tapping the air bubbles out. Check to see if you have the correct amount of medicine drawn up.
Keep the needle clean by removing the syringe from the vial.
Place the needle cover back on the needle if you plan to put the syringe down.
